IJAHMAN LEVI (Jamajka)
Jedna z największych legend klasycznego roots reggae, weteran obecny na scenie od 62 lat, powraca do Ostródy.
W efekcie dorastania w dwóch różniących się bardzo od siebie środowiskach jak Jamajka i Anglia, muzyka IJahMana rzuca wyzwanie granicom i wąskim definicjom. Omija marketingowe tricki i dotyka spraw duchowych, miłości i człowieczeństwa.
IJahman Levi urodził się w w 1946 roku w Manchester na Jamajce jako Trevor Sutherland. Muzyczną edukację zdobywał w Kingston, gdzie uczył się śpiewu u Joe Higgsa. W 1963 roku, w wieku 12 lat, nagrał swój pierwszy utwór dla producenta Duke’a Reida.
Rok później przeprowadził się z rodziną do Wielkiej Brytanii, gdzie założył pierwszy zespół Vibrations. Kolejna grupa nazywała się Youth and Rudie and the Shell Shock Show, a The Youth było ówczesnym pseudonimem IJahmana.
W 1970 roku Trevor złamał prawo i skazano go na trzy lata więzienia. Tam przybrał ksywę IJahman Levi i napisał swój największy utwór „Jah Heavy Load” (wydany w 1975 roku).
Po wyjściu na wolność trafił na ulicę, a następnie znalazł schronienie w siedzibie Twelve Tribes, ośrodku Rastafari w Londynie.
Z Geoffrey’em Chungiem stworzył dwa najważniejsze swoje albumy „Haile I Hymn” (1978) i „Are We A Warrior” (1979) wydane przez Island Records. Dzięki nim IJahman Levi zdobył międzynarodowy rozgłos.
Wkrótce potem rozszedł się z Island i założył własną wytwórnię Tree Roots Record International. w 1985 roku jego duet z Madge „I Do” był hitem na brytyjskiej liście reggae.
Ijahman ma na koncie ponad 30 albumów i dziesiątki singli. Współpracował z takimi wielkimi postaciami muzyki jak Sly & Robbie, Earl Chinna Smith, Ras Michael, Lloyd Parks czy Eric Clapton.
Objechał cały świat i wciąż nie przestaje koncertować, będąc jedną z największych wciąż aktywnych ikon muzyki roots reggae. Kilkakrotnie występował też w Polsce, w tym na Ostróda Reggae Festival w 2008 roku.

One of the greatest legends of classic roots reggae, a veteran present on stage for amazing 62 years, returns to Ostróda.
As a result of growing up in two very different environments, Jamaica and England, IJahMan’s music challenges boundaries and narrow definitions. Omitting marketing tricks, it touches spiritual matters, love and humanity.
IJahman Levi was born in 1946 in Manchester, Jamaica as Trevor Sutherland. He received his musical education in Kingston, where he learned to sing from Joe Higgs. In 1963, at the age of 12, he recorded his first song for producer Duke Reid.
A year later, he moved with his family to Great Britain, where he founded his first band, Vibrations. The next group was called Youth and Rudie and the Shell Shock Show, and The Youth was IJahman’s nickname at the time.
In 1970, Trevor broke the law and was sentenced to three years in prison. There he changed to IJahman Levi and wrote his greatest song „Jah Heavy Load” (released in 1975).
After being released, he ended up on the streets and then found shelter in the headquarters of Twelve Tribes, a Rastafari centre in London.
He created his two most important albums „Haile I Hymn” (1978) and „Are We A Warrior” (1979) with Geoffrey Chung and they were released by Island Records. Thanks to them, IJahman Levi gained international fame.
Shortly after, he parted ways with Island and founded his own label, Tree Roots Record International. In 1985, his song with Madge „I Do” was a hit on the British reggae charts.
Ijahman recorded over 30 albums and dozens of singles to his credit. He has collaborated with such great figures of music as Sly & Robbie, Earl Chinna Smith, Ras Michael, Lloyd Parks and Eric Clapton.
He has traveled the world and continues to tour, being one of the greatest icons of roots reggae music still active. He has also performed in Poland several times, including Ostróda Reggae Festival in 2008.
